My Story

Welcome to my blog and thank you for visiting.

My name is Sonia. Though, some of you may know me by a different name.

My mum always wanted to have a girl named Sonia. From the day I was born and she first saw me she called me Sonia. So did everyone. My parents and my grandparents. My aunts and uncles and cousins. My neighbours. My friends. The local shopkeepers. The priest. I grew up a very happy Sonia and it wasn’t until I started the primary school at the age of 7 that I found out about my official name. The name my father chose for me at the registry office back when I was a tiny baby.

He did not named me Sonia. Was it because of the fact that it was rather uncommon? Was it due to the fact that it wasn’t consider a Christian name? Or was it too short and not grand enough? I do not know. What I do know is I hated my official name from the start. Katarzyna.

I hated it for the very same reasons it was chosen upon me. It was dreadfully common. In any class, in any camp, in any club there would always be at least 3 or 4 girls sharing the name with me and we would usually be numbered. Now how does #2 sound? It was long and had all sorts of versions people just randomly picked to call me. Kasia. Kaśka. Kasiula. Kasieńka. Kasiunia. And my absolutely least favourite and blood boiling Kacha. Now, if you’re not Polish you are more than likely struggling with pronouncing all those, which, brings us to the next reason. It is frequently mispronounced and misspelled. Fortunately, everyone in Ireland has a short version of their name so I came up with Kat and for the first time in my life I not only accepted the name but got to like it too.

Deep inside I always feel Sonia though. Always have and always will. So when I decided to start up a blog and make it my happy place it was the only name I had in mind.  is a place where stories are stored. Everyday stories. Funny stories. Old family stories.
